The land is where the story of Armistead begins. Since 1887, when the Short family began to farm their nearly 200 acres west of Franklin, Tennessee, this land has fed, nurtured and sustained generations of their family as well as others in the community. Honoring this legacy will include the next evolution of a family farm in which agriculture is the heart of a sustainable, mixed-use development.

Armistead will embody the ideals of an agrihood where people of all ages may live, work, learn, and play amongst the vibrant beauty of an active farm operation. The majority of the development will remain as open space devoted to croplands, grazing pastures, and orchards interspersed among mature trees, the central creek branch, and historic farm elements. The most fertile soil will be used for agricultural activities so the built environment becomes complementary.
Hamlets will incorporate retail markets and essential services as well as gathering spaces and amenities. From a creekside cottage as part of a pocket neighborhood to a second story flat overlooking the village square or a multifamily residence presented as an architecturally thoughtful “big house” design, an array of housing types will be available. Additionally by offering traditional single family homes, farmstead compounds and tiny houses or micro apartments, there will be a place for everyone who wants to call Armistead home.
A boutique inn is envisioned to welcome visitors, whether on vacation or participating in agricultural and educational programs that will be offered at Armistead. Season by season residents and visitors will witness the miracle of nature as seeds carefully planted in the Spring become verdant rows of vegetables, herbs, and flowers to cultivate, harvest and enjoy. At the end of a summer day, experience the restorative life at Armistead as you walk along the creek and watch the sun set and then look across the pasture as the lightning bugs appear.
Indebted to those who have come before us, all can benefit by understanding the values and simple pleasures that are woven in the daily life lessons learned on a farm. We believe many will be drawn to the vision and opportunity to share in all that is offered in an agrihood and to enjoy life at Armistead for today and generations to come.
“Nature is a great teacher. It humbles you because you cannot control it. You can live with it and respect the land and see the crops flourish and the animals thrive. It teaches you to be a good caretaker in order to be able to hand the land off to your descendants. On a farm you learn patience and perseverance. You see the cycle of life daily and learn we are all a part of it. We tend the land so that it gives us life and a livelihood.”
